In Durban South Africa, on 14 July 2005 it was decided to include the Geirangerfjord and the Nærøyfjord and their immediate surroundings on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The geological significance of the areas and the uniqueness and the beauty of the landscapes has resulted in them becoming Norway's first natural heritage areas to be included on the prestigious world heritage list.
Facts about the Geirangerfjord UNESCO area:
The area covers 500 km2 and comprises the Sunnlyvsfjord, the Geirangerfjord, Norddal and the mountains east to Tafjord in the municipalities of Norddal and Stranda in Møre and Romsdal. |
